Learn how to see what you are painting. Students will paint from still life subjects, including Native American items. There will be several still life set-ups with plenty of room to move around the room. The class will cover everything from setting up a still life to learning to see beyond the subject while working with a limited palette. The basics of composition, color, values and edges and how to approach different surfaces of a subject will be explored using Tom Lucas's unique perspective, which can bring a painting to life.

Bill Rushing Award Announced at upcoming Death Valley '49ers Art Show

Tom and I will be attending this year's event and look forward to seeing Peggy and the family and to celebrate Bill Rushing.

Bill Rushing, a beloved Western artist who died before the Death Valley '49ers Invitation Western Art Show in November last year after being a staple at that show for nearly 40 years, left a gap that those who collect his work will find hard to fill. However, Bill's wife, Peggy, also an artist and a regular at the Death Valley show, has let the word out that she is returning to the show this November 11-14 and taking two booths as before. Bill's work will be on display in the same location as before at the far end under the shade of the huge smoke tree. Peggy's work will be next to his, as always. This represents major effort by Peggy since the family home is in Cameron, Texas, but the coupple has made the trip together year after year and though she'll be making the trip without Bill this time, it's something she wants to do.

To honor his memory and his art, a new award has been created. The William Rushing Best of Show Award. The show has long had the Sid Burns Award, which is given to the artist whose work demonstrates high quality but who also represents the spirit of the show by displaying work exceptionally well and welcoming and promoting other artists. The Rushing Award will be given to a single work that a panel of judges deems as the Best in the Show. Peggy Rushing will present this award at the Artists' Breakfast Saturday morning and their six children will be on hand to honor their father's contribution to Western Art and to the Death Valley Show.

This art show is one of the longest running Western shows today. It began 61 years ago as part of the Death Valley '49er Encampment, an event now in its 61st year, that recognizes the beauty and value of Death Valley, its unusual geography, flora and fauna, history, people and their lore. The Encampment specifically honors the small band of gold seekers who came west in 1849, disorganized and unprepared and found themselves stranded in the stark desert. Their story is one of the West's great dramas. The party survived, barely, due to great courage and stamina.

The Encampment will be held in Furance Creek and Stove Pipe Wells November 11-14 with many events starting as early as November 5th. The art show is sponsored by this event. All art is for sale. Collector's of Rushing's work should take advantage of this opportunity to see his work amassed once again. Oil Painters of America Accepts Tom Lucas as Associate Member

Tom applied to the Oil Painters of America organization and was recently accepted as an Associate Member. What does this mean, it allows him to become involved in paint outs, the critique program, workshops, and entering regional and national shows.

He has submitted two oil paintings to the upcoming National OPA exhibition to be held at the Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, April 30, 2010. If one of his paintings is accepted, he and Tammy plan to make a trip back to Scottsdale at the end of April. Notification is Febuary 25, so watch for an update on this soon.

This painting is Called " Crow Medicine".

This Is a piece that I painted at the Two Shot Art Show in Torrington, Wyoming. We have 45 minutes to complete our paintings or pieces then they are put up for auction with half of proceeds going to Santa's Helper and the other half go to the Artist. It is a fun show to do and I enjoy visting with the other artists.

I am looking forward to coming back next year.

We had the chance to go and visit our Good Friends, Kevin & Debbie who own The Elephant Head Lodge in Cody, Wyo. What a great chance to relax and visit with our friends. And a much needed period of down time. We are looking forward to our next visit, we enjoyed beautiful scenery and abundances of wildlife.

The solitude gave us a chance to recharge our batteries.

In essay it gave us a chance to reconnect with ourselves. Praise The Lord!

We are back in Lander, Wyoming where is it cold and snowing we have about 12 inch of snow on the ground and lots of road closure we just made it before the Weather Storm Warning.

4 days left at Celebration of Fine Art Show Scottsdale, AZ

We are down to 4 days left in the Show and as I write this blog the wind is blowing hard and causing the tent to rattle. I have managed to paint seventeen paintings during the show some big and some smaller ones, it has been another very interesting show. It seems like the atmosphere in the tent is good for my productive energy and with all of the excellent critique I have managed to turn out some very nice paintings.

We will head for home on April 1, 2009 it is a two day drive if the roads are good if not it could take an extra day we are looking forward to home ( Lander, Wyoming). We will be very busy when we get there catching up on everything and trying to get ready for the summer at the " Silver Sage Gallery in Dubois Wyoming See you there .

6 th Week of the show Celebration of Fine Art Show

We are into our 6Th week of the art show and I can't figure out where the time has gone it seems like we just got started time sure fly when you are having fun. Well I have managed to paint8 paintings so far and far me that's pretty good. One of the best things about being in this art show is all of the good critique one can get from top of the line artists who are willing to share. It really does make for better paintings and you also come away with new angles,approach and perspectives for your week.

The weather is warming up to the 80's people around here liked the warm weather SO we expect to have more people in the tents which will be good for sales.
Well I will start a new painting on Monday March 1st so stay tuned for more art.

This is a painting of several objects, A very old Native American Pot and a turquoise bear amulet and small brass bell. The whole concept was about the composition about taking some ordinary objects and making a strong pleasing painting with simple objects.

I like the way a young child looks when they are just being themselves so in this painting I had several objectives that were important; the first was that soft child like softness in the face and also, I wanted her to look like a true native American child not a little white girl dress up to look like a Native American Child.
